When a Blackout Leaves You With Hot Water—and When It Does Not

The short answer: stored hot water may work even when the heater does not
You may have hot water during a power outage, but only if water can still reach your fixtures and one of these conditions applies:
- Your water heater has a tank containing water heated before the outage.
- Your gas-fired heater is designed to operate without household electricity.
The first condition gives you a limited reserve; it does not mean the heater is still working. The practical distinction is storage. A tank may leave you with a temporary hot-water supply even when its heating system is disabled. A tankless unit ordinarily has no comparable reservoir, so loss of operation generally means an immediate loss of new hot-water production.
