Verizon Phone Showing SOS? Check the Outage Before Resetting
What SOS means on a Verizon iPhone, how to check local network issues, the 15-second reconnect step, and options for calls during an outage.
If you need emergency help in the U.S., try calling 911 even if your iPhone shows SOS. It may connect through another carrier’s network. Don’t wait for Verizon service to return before trying. Apple explains SOS and emergency calling.
If 911 will not connect: Emergency SOS via satellite may let you text emergency services when cellular and Wi-Fi connections are unavailable. In the U.S., it requires an eligible iPhone 14 or later running iOS 16.1 or later; some models purchased outside the U.S. do not support satellite connectivity. Tap Emergency Text via Satellite if offered and follow the onscreen instructions. Connecting requires being outside with a clear view of the sky and horizon—move outside only if safe. For a non-emergency, connect to working Wi-Fi, check Verizon’s local network status, then try one reconnect cycle. SOS alone does not confirm a Verizon outage.

What SOS means
On an iPhone, SOS or SOS only means the phone is not connected to your cellular network, but emergency calls may use other carriers’ networks. “No Service” and “Searching” also indicate no cellular connection. The SOS label is not confirmation that an emergency call has been placed or that a satellite connection is active. Apple’s status-bar guidance.
An outage is one possible cause; coverage, account or SIM/eSIM issues can also interrupt service.
Check the outage, then reconnect
- Check your location. Open Verizon’s network tools, choose Check network status, and enter the address where service failed. Verizon also offers signed-in network-event notifications. Check the affected address rather than relying on an old nationwide-outage headline.
- Try Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off. Apple recommends this to reconnect when the cellular network is available. It cannot repair a carrier outage.
- Restart the iPhone if SOS remains. If Verizon reports an active outage, prioritize another way to communicate rather than repeatedly changing phone settings. Apple’s reconnect and restart instructions.
If Verizon reports recovery—or no local issue—but your phone still shows SOS:
- Open Settings → Cellular, select your Verizon line if needed, and check that it is turned on.
- On Wi-Fi, open Settings → General → About and install a carrier-settings update if offered.
- Contact Verizon to check account status, coverage and SIM/eSIM provisioning. If the carrier rules out account and network problems and a hardware issue is suspected, Apple says device service may be needed. Apple’s troubleshooting checklist.
Can you call over Wi-Fi?
Try Wi-Fi Calling if it was already activated. On iPhone, look under Settings → Cellular → Wi-Fi Calling, selecting the Verizon line first if you use multiple SIMs. When Wi-Fi Calling is available, Apple says “Wi-Fi” appears in the status bar in Control Center. Apple’s setup instructions.
There is an important limitation: Verizon requires an iPhone to be connected to its network to activate Wi-Fi Calling. First-time setup may therefore fail during an outage. Wi-Fi Calling also routes calls and messages to Verizon’s network, so it is not a guaranteed workaround for every carrier failure. Keep its registered emergency address current.
